Nature Photography Meetup

Nature Photography Meetup

Saturday 29 June
Tunstall Hills - 10am - 2 Hours
Sunderland Photography Group
Michael Veitch
Join this session for tips on how to use your camera settings to creatively capture nature in a visually interesting way. We will be looking at composition, focus, and colour.

Many professional offices and places of business have large prints gracing their wall space of things such as fields of flowers, a butterfly perched on a leaf, and a single dew drop on a rose petal. These beautiful images are all around us in nature. It just takes that special "eye" to not only see it but to capture it in a way that will turn that simple little piece of nature into a beautiful piece of art. We will learn how to use different angles, light and shadows, and settings to make subjects pop.

Macro photography is a unique form of photography that involves photographing small objects to make them look life-sized or more significant in the photo. The usual subjects include flowers and small insects, which we don't normally get to see up close with the naked eye.

The class will start when the insects are more active. So be ready to explore and capture breathe-taking macro images.

The water is often full of activity as we head towards the end of the breeding season with many females raising their second clutch of the year.

Although you only need minimum equipment for this session, I highly recommend bringing a telephoto lens that goes to 200mm. If you are working with a heavy lens, I also recommend bringing a tripod with a ball joint pivot.

Wayne was really great - very knowledgeable and he brought along essential equipment to show us, and he gave us a wish list of 'nice to haves' too. Although it was a mixed night of cloud and a few clear patches it wasn't possible to photograph the Milky Way, but we were very able to practice what Wayne taught. Really great location too - we were able to use the church and keep warm and dry, as well as benefit from better lighting! I really enjoyed the session - I learned a lot and would recommend to anyone and everyone interested in photographing the stars or Milky Way.

This long exposure is from the top part of the small waterfall in Holywell Dene. The waterfall used to be part of the old watermill as far as I'm aware. Anyway, it was a cold day in March and had been snowing. There was a branch, as you can see, sticking out and covered in a bit of snow and ice. The ice was floating on top of the running water and looked really nice. So I thought I would try a little long exposure.

I took this photo while babysitting for friends of my parents when I was about 15 round about 1960. Being keen on photography I always had a camera in my bicycle saddle bag and amused myself one evening by picturing these ornaments. The camera would have been an Edixa Reflex D 35mm with an 85mm 1.8 Pentax Takuma lens. The film was Ilford FP3 developed in ID11 developer, mixed from the basic chemicals at home. The film was bought in bulk and loaded into used cassettes using a device my father

This morning was not very promising, but still I was determined to get out and take pictures! Headed to Sunny Sands and found these two rocks in the sand that caught my interest. The tide was rising and the sun started glowing in the sky! "Perfect moment", and the a wave caught me by surprise and made my feet soaking wet! Apparently sign of good luck, and maybe so, it's one of my best images and was definitely worth it!

I had been out of photography for a few years, and was just getting back into it when my brother and I took a trip to the eastern Sierra for fall colors in October 2017. We had been out all day when we returned to McGee Creek during the late afternoon. A had set up my camera and tripod to get a long exposure shot of leaves on a rock in the creek, when I looked to my right and saw another great image. I realized that my "eye" had returned, and I was exhilarated! Rock with aspen leaf, McGee Cr
